AP World History: Modern Unit 1 practice questions
A Song emperor needs peasants to obey without posting a soldier on every corner. He finds a philosophy that says: obeying your father IS obeying the state. What philosophy turns family loyalty into political control?
Neo-Confucianism — a Song blend of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist ideas. The catch: it's NOT the original Confucianism — it just called itself tradition. Hierarchy was the point: fathers over sons, husbands over wives, rulers over everyone.
You're a Song Dynasty teenager. Talking back to your parents isn't just rude — it's practically treason. The same philosophy that demands you honor your father demands you honor the emperor. What's this principle called?
Filial piety — the duty to honor and obey parents and ancestors. Song rulers promoted it because the logic scaled: obey your father without question, and you'll obey the emperor too.
You want a government job in Song China. Your family name doesn't matter. Your connections don't matter. The ONLY thing that matters is whether you can pass a brutally hard exam on Confucian classics. What system is this, and why is it revolutionary?
The civil service examination system — staffing the bureaucracy by merit. Officials owed their careers to the system, not to powerful families.
A Song elite family deliberately breaks their 5-year-old daughter's toes and binds them until her feet are permanently deformed. This isn't cruelty in their eyes — it's an investment. How is crippling a child a status symbol?
Foot binding — crippling girls' feet as a status symbol of elite wealth. It marked a wife too rich to need labor, and showed how Confucian hierarchy subordinated women — their property became their husband's, and widows couldn't remarry.
One grain of rice changed everything. A Vietnamese strain that resists drought and produces TWO harvests per year arrives in Song China — and triggers a domino effect that transforms the entire civilization. What is it, and what dominoes fall?
Champa rice — a drought-resistant strain yielding two harvests a year. The chain reaction: double harvests → food surplus → population doubles → more labor → more trade → economic boom.
A Song merchant pays for 500 pounds of iron with a slip of paper instead of hauling coins. His grandfather would've called that insane. What economic transformation made paper money not just possible but necessary?
Commercialization — a shift from subsistence to producing for the market. Once you trade iron, silk, and porcelain across Eurasia, hauling coins is impractical — paper money was the inevitable fix.
Shipping grain from southern China to the northern capital by road takes weeks and costs a fortune. Song engineers build a 1,100-mile shortcut connecting the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. What is it, and why does it matter more than any invention?
The Grand Canal — a 1,100-mile waterway linking the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. It slashed shipping costs so much that merchants could move bulk goods, not just luxuries — and the whole economy accelerated.
Buddhism promises enlightenment — but one version says only monks can achieve it, while the other says EVERYONE can. If you're a farmer with no time for a monastery, which branch do you join, and what's it called?
Mahayana Buddhism — the 'inclusive' branch dominant in East Asia. It opened practice to all believers and emphasized bodhisattvas (enlightened beings who stay behind to help others). The 'exclusive' branch is Theravada Buddhism (Sri Lanka/Southeast Asia), which kept practice mainly within monasteries.
